Concrete road construction

From the beginning of August until the end of October 2012, the concrete road builders of Bickhardt constructed the aircraft movement areas for the new construction of the commercial airport of Kassel-Calden. This work task included aprons, taxiways as well as parking and deicing areas. The concrete workers constructed altogether 100,000 square metres of paved areas using the method of concrete construction.

A 36 cm-thick single layer of concrete was installed by means of the large SP 1500 slipform paver. After erecting the steel formwork with sinusoidal cross-section, the material was applied with a working width of 15 metres to a hydraulically bound base layer. A mobile mixing plant erected at the edge of the airport ground ensured the constant supply with material. In peak times, 240 cubic metres of concrete were manufactured per hour.

Bickhardt Bau AG explored new territory in a pilot project at the A 6 motorway close to Kaiserslautern: In cooperation with an ARGE partner, Bickhardt Bau signed a so-called function building contract with the Federal State Office for Mobility of the federal state of Rhineland Palatinate. This contract governs the complete renovation and the permanent maintenance of the 8.4-kilometre long motorway section. For a period of 25 years, the ARGE partners have to ensure that the motorway section between the motorway junction of Waldmohr and the three-leg motorway interchange of Landstuhl-West, in the driving direction of Mannheim, which was completely renovated in 2009, will be maintained in an excellent condition.

In order to ensure the required properties from an economic point of view over such a long period of time, the 8.25-kilometre long motorway section was constructed using the method of concrete construction under the technical leadership of Bickhardt Bau AG. The soil in certain motorway sections was improved with lime cement by means of the so-called mixed-in-place method before.

The employees of the department for concrete road construction constructed this traffic circle close to Hünfeld. It is the first traffic circle of Hesse which was completely made in concrete design. The traffic junction has four accesses and exits which ensure a better connection of the northern city centre to the federal roads 27 and 84 and the industrial estate.

The concrete pavement of the round structure is 28 centimetres thick. Its outer diameter is 40 metres and the lane width is six metres. The concrete traffic circle was constructed onto a substructure made of asphalt. The construction was performed with the aid of a vibrating beam and a levelling roller (striker roller) in a manual laying procedure. The total surface area is 2415 square metres. With regard to the formwork for the structure, the flexible plastic formwork elements proved their worth once more. Owing to the shearing forces and the varying motion behaviour of the building material, expansion joints were installed in order to achieve a complete separation of the circular lane from the accesses and exits. In another work step, the kerbs were affixed by means of special adhesive onto the concrete. The traffic circle, together with the new connection of the B 84 to the B 27, was opened to traffic at the beginning of December 2011.

The department for concrete road construction of Bickhardt Bau AG constructed a traffic circle in Gammertingen, 70 kilometres to the south of Stuttgart. This traffic circle was completely made in concrete design. It replaces a very busy road junction area in the northern outskirts, at the federal road 32 in the direction of Hechingen, and therefore reduces the danger of accidents at this black spot. It is one of the very first traffic circles of Baden-Wuerttemberg made in concrete design. It should be noted that this type of design has proved its worth in traffic circles with a high volume of heavy-load vehicle traffic, especially in Switzerland. Deformations in the bituminous pavements which are often caused by wheel loads or shearing forces are avoided in this case. It is estimated by experts that the useful life is approximately 40 years.

The concrete construction specialists of Bickhardt Bau AG installed altogether 500 cubic metres of concrete onto a substructure made of asphalt. This work was done in a manual laying procedure. First the actual traffic circle was paved with concrete. The outside diameter of the round structure is 35 metres and the lane width is seven metres. The concrete layer is 28 centimetres thick. Afterwards the four individual traffic circle exits were constructed, along with cycle paths and footpaths. The department used flexible formwork elements for this purpose for the first time.
